Church
pews as we know them were introduced during the Reformation in the 14th
Century to shape a more formal sermon with the pulpit as the focal point
of church architecture and worship.
"How we sit when we gather reflects what we believe is important
with worship. The early church met in homes, it was communal, looking
at each other in small rooms, discussing and teaching Scripture, praying
for one another and eating a meal together. You could walk around, have
dialogue..."
(From The Oddness of Pews by Dan Kimball, 2006)
Using reclaimed pews from Gilmerton Church in Edinburgh, I wanted to create
an informal seating area that encourages multiple user interaction; in
a sense, reincarnating the material full circle to its original roots.
